We spend a third of our lives asleep, so it's important we get this part of our life right.

Unfortunately, modern life isn't always conducive to this and we can often be left unable to sleep.

Stress, our love of using screens, alcohol, caffeine and late nights all mean we don't always get the most out of our shut-eye.

Fortunately, there are few simple things we can change which could have a positive effect on your sleep.

Perhaps one of the most crucial changes is bedroom temperature.

While there's nothing as welcoming or uplifting as a cosy bedroom, a large number of us struggle to sleep because our rooms are too hot.

A study commissioned by eve Sleep surveyed 2000 Brits, and found a huge 50 percent of respondents had problems sleeping because their rooms were too toasty.

We should be setting the thermostat to a relatively cool 16.1 degrees Celsius.

Overheating of the human body, especially at night and during sleep, can cause hyperventilation, reduces our body's O2 content, and can worsen existing health issues.

That's not all.

To further ensure you get a good night's sleep, you should also be aiming to be in bed by 10.39pm and resist the urge to look at your phone.

Ideally you should avoid screen time for 37 minutes before bedding down.
